Image
Specific SME Training manuals are now available to individuals and organizations. The training modules have been developed based on author's expertise and experiences working with PNG SMEs since 2012 as a private business consultant. These SME Training Modules are comprehensive, covering key aspects of the SME business administration. They are created to be interactive, simple and concise, to impart the much needed business and financial literacy skills generally lacking in the PNG SME sector. MODERNIZE OUR MINDSET

MODERNIZE OUR MINDSET By Willie Mell When I was working with ExxonMobil  Corporation,  I was taught a life changing lesson  - to adapt! At ExxonMobil there is no language, sex, race  or nationality.  Everyone is equal, and ExxonMobil's culture is change and adaptation. If you're rigid, there's no place for you!.  I remember, one time a  senior petroleum engineer who just arrived from the US but sadly got terminated  forthwith because he didn't put on his seatbelt. Very insignificant rule, isn't it?  Thing is simply  he didn't comply with conditions he had agreed and signed.. Him coming from the same country didn't  matter  to ExxonMobil!.  The principle ExxonMobil learnt over time from US is adaptation and change that gives ExxonMobil the competitive edge!  Because  US is multicultural and open and survived  through changing times, ExxonMobil learnt those  principles. You flow with the change or you are...

COVID-19 shockwave on SME businesses in PNG

A reason to consider provincial or regional autonomy by PNG government

Image
We are thousand different tribes distinctly peculiar. We are actually a nation made up of a thousand plus nations. We are united nations. The roots of our distinct thousand languages and cultures took 50k - 60k years to evolve! White men came to our shores only 100 ago with their language and culture. What is 100 years compared to 50k - 60k years of cultural and linguistic evolutions! We learn and adopt the white men's culture but is superficial. Deep down are our own distinct ways of life. We can never be as developed as China, Japan, Germany,  England, France, etc under our current system of government! A federal system of government  like the USA could work well for us given our circumstances. Give each province autonomy, and let each run its own affairs. Our current state is like, someone's intending a superior solution (product) by mixing clay and iron! The Tower of Babylon could reach the sky if the builders still spoke the same language. But conf...

THE ART OF SALE

Image
Sales involves both persuasion and value proposition pitch, depending on the continuity of the type of business you are in, or product you are selling (either for yourself or your employer). When you want to make a quick one-off sale you are naturally persuasive. Your aim is to take rid of the items as quickly as possible. But, for long term recurring revenue and growth revenue on your product/service sales, pitching value proposition is critical because you are selling a solution your customer is after. That solution could be a personal or business solution. Customer is your (employer's) livelihood as far as survival of your business is concerned! Pitching value proposition and once successfully closed, followed by healthy customer relationship and timely after-sales-support will surely take your business a long way. This is where customer loyality is achieved! Happy selling!

Every employee is a sales person

Image
Many times companies make a mistake by not treating all of their employees as bunch of sales people! And employees often forget that they are sales people of the company they work for. Sales people are faces of the company they work for. Without them there is no revenue generated. Without them companies cease to exist. A sales department isn't enough if a company aims to increase revenue growth and expansion. Make every employee sales person and meeting a revenue target is an easy assignment!

PRIVATIZE SOME STATE OWNED ENTERPRISES (SOEs)

Image
By Willie Mell For years, most of the State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) have never been run efficiently and profitably up to standards, though a few have been profitable along the way, like MVIL. Simple reason being, political influence! In the absence of politics they could do better. The SOEs include KTH, PPL, ANG, PNG Ports Corporation, Post-PNG,  NDB, MVIL and PNG Water, Marape-Steven government is now critical about seeing dividends paid to the State as being the sole shareholder. This sounds too good, because no previous government was very vocal about this, other than Sir Mek's reign. But, how long will Marape-Steven last? Will the good policy initiatives live beyond their reign if a new government comes on board? As long as SOEs remain SOEs, nothing will ever change unless they are made to run like private corporations, with efficient systems, strong corporate governance & leadership, S.M.A.R.T missions, purely independent from undue influences, especially from...
